Clinical Observership & Involvement
Clinical Shadowing
Entry-level observation programme for medical students or early-career physicians. In coordination with a clinical mentor with focus on decision-making and patient pathways.
Programme Overview
ATDERA's clinical shadowing programme is an entry-level observational placement designed for medical students in their clinical years and recent medical graduates seeking structured exposure to real-world hospital medicine before or during early postgraduate training. The programme runs over one to two weeks and pairs each participant with a verified clinician mentor across a selected clinical department.
The mentor relationship is central to the programme's design. Unlike unstructured hospital observation, clinical shadowing through ATDERA is explicitly oriented around clinical reasoning and patient pathway observation: the mentor actively explains their decision-making process, directs the participant's attention to relevant clinical findings, and provides structured commentary on the diagnostic and management choices made during each clinical encounter. Participants observe outpatient consultations, ward rounds, and relevant procedural activity as appropriate to the department.
The programme also incorporates guided reflection on clinical communication — both between clinician and patient and within the clinical team — drawing participants' attention to how information is gathered, synthesised, and acted upon in different clinical contexts. Participants are required to maintain a reflective log throughout the placement, which forms the basis for a structured end-of-programme review with their mentor. The programme is particularly suited to students or graduates considering a specialty pathway who want direct observational exposure before committing to a formal training application.
